Know the limitations
Family member and friends should be made aware that whilst hearing aids help you to hear better, they do not restore normal hearing. They should know that you may still need them to repeat information at times, they should try to be near you when conversing, and they should try to keep unnecessary noise to a minimum.

Ask how things are going
Family members should not hesitate to ask how well they are being understood. Find out if you need to move closer, speak more clearly, or repeat the message. Family members and friends should help to evaluate how well the hearing aid user has accomplished the goals that were established during the initial fitting.

Use clear speech
A speaker using 'clear speech' changes their typical speech pattern by precisely, accurately and fully forming every word. By producing sounds and words completely, without dropping endings, family members will make communication easier for the hearing-impaired person in all listening situations.
